Question by callboy3000: What recourse do I have if a company uses code i developed but is not paying me for the work.? They paid half the bill up front, continue to use a feature (internal site search) on their website I developed and is working properly. They will not pay the remainder of the bill because of a completely unrelated matter. For clarity, the unrelated matter is PPC advertising that i gave them credit terms on but did not perform as well as liked, advertising purchased on their behalf. If you have a contract you can take it to a lawyer. Depending on the amount, one phone call from a lawyer might get them to pay rather than get their lawyer involved.

Having been a software contractor, I can tell you they almost certainly have the right to use the code freely as a "work for hire" unless it was clearly licensed otherwise. This is simply a collection dispute. Depending on the amount, small claims court is available to you. I would not say the two matters are unrelated though - although legally they may be separate, they are clearly conflated to both parties. Have you tried negotiating a way to settle BOTH disputes together?
